This series of our troubleshooting and repair guide is for most versions of Metal Gearbox Style Airsoft Electric Guns Only!

Always wear eye protection when working with your airsoft guns!

Can you get to your gearbox and identify if it is metal? This guide is intended to help you overcome common problems with your metal gearbox, but you must be capable of taking out the gearbox. You can visit our airsoft gun repair library to learn more about airsoft gun dis-assembly processes for specific models. Your user manual that came with your gun can typically provide you with some basic guides for taking apart the externals of your specific airsoft model gun.

Below is a partial parts diagram of the main internal parts of a V2 airsoft gearbox:

Learning to troubleshoot your airsoft gun regardless of which version gearbox it has means learning some basic and advanced facts about the common mechanical devices and systems used to build your gun. The above diagram does not show metal bushings or bearings at the end of each of the gear axles. We cover the importance of installing metal bushings or bearings here.

For now you need to focus on learning how to tear down your guns externals and get to the gearbox when maintenance or repairs are needed. You will need to have some common tools such as metric allen wrenches, philip's (crosspoint), plus standard (slotted), style screwdrivers. The list of different size and type tools needed to repair all airsoft AEG models varies greatly so one of your first tasks will be to assemble the proper tools needed to dis-assemble your airsoft gun model. Most tools needed are available at your local hardware store. I will make a special mention of the motor pinion gear, you can locate this part in the above diagram, a special gear puller is needed to change this part.  Most airsoft guns will include a manual with blowout diagram's or exploded views of your airsoft gun model, not the most useful tool in the box but still a resource available to you. If you are having trouble taking apart the external's and getting the gearbox out of the body you can get photos and tips in the airsoft gun repair pics library page. (see link in main menu at top of page)

airsoft gun gearbox styles

The above picture gives you a general idea of some of the many designs and types of airsoft gun gearboxes that are in production. This is not even close to a complete list, new models plus new versions of old models are being manufactured and modified every day. For now let's focus more on the mechanical operation of the similar parts inside and outside of the common style gearbox and not so much on the version. The MP-7 is an exception to the rule as this little gearbox unit is very different in design from the rest of the styles but worth covering in a later article. **The V7 gearbox shown above is one design by G&G, however a more common version is used in the TM, and AGM V7 models.

Well for now, I will leave you with some tips on removing a version two gearbox.
